Community garden development at the Intertribal Friendship House has had real benefits and has been a good partnership. Based in Oakland, CA, Intertribal Friendship House (IFH) was established in 1955 as one of the first urban American Indian community centers in the nation. The Bay Area American Indian community is multi-tribal, made of Native people and their descendants from all over the United States and the Americas.
The garden had fits and starts over the past few years, and finally over the past year, we worked together to make a concerted effort to revitalize the garden, which now after months of work welcomes visitors to the site, with medicinal plants, vegetable starts, and a sense of peace.
Special thanks to Cesar Gonzalez and Nikol Trujillo, who have stewarded Intertribal's garden development.
